Everyone has the right to participate, volunteer and enjoy the many benefits that physical activity and sport can have on their health, wellbeing and development.

Organisations and volunteers across the country are already working hard to support their local communities to be able to do this – thank you!

We know that people’s ability to be active is influenced by lots of different things, like their own personal circumstances, their finances and the environment and opportunities around them.

Every area’s different. What’s available in one place, might not be in another. Differences and inequalities exist. Some communities, especially in lower-income areas, may have fewer opportunities to be active and need more support.

There’s a growing movement to tackle these inequalities: it’s called place-based working.

What is place-based working?

No-one understands a place like the people who live, work and volunteer in it.

Place-based working brings together the leaders, policy and decision-makers and organisations that can influence change to:

  • Understand the unique make-up of their local communities.
  • Engage with and listen to local people to get to the heart of what’s really needed to tackle inactivity.
  • Look at what’s already available.
  • Find solutions to tackling inactivity together.
  • Share resources and support.

Take a look at our animation to find out more about place-based working and explore the different ways you and your organisation can get involved.

How can you get involved?

If you’re willing, there’s lots you can do to help. You can:

Find out who participates and volunteers at your organisation and see if there’s any groups missing from your local community that you could reach out to.
Talk to inactive local people to understand what they need, any barriers they face and how to overcome them.
Develop relationships with other, locally trusted organisations who can connect you to new people.
Think about how you can make your offer more inclusive and accessible, so it has the biggest impact.
Ask others, including your Active Partnership, what’s going on in your area to help tackle inactivity and get involved in conversations with local policy and decision-makers.
Use the collective voice of your participants and volunteers to constructively challenge the status quo and ensure the right support and solutions exist in your area.

By joining together with others at the local level, you can use your passion and enthusiasm to ensure that your area is a place that everyone can enjoy being active in.
