The video begins with a white screen framed with a colourful border in the Buddle colours. The Buddle logo appears at the top of the screen with supported by Sport England and the Sport England logo beneath. A green leaf flies across the screen. The title of the video Sustainable travel appears beneath in dark blue text.
Upbeat music starts and continues throughout the video. Subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen throughout, accompanying the voiceover delivered by Chris Boardman CBE.
The frame transitions with vertical Buddle colour stripes panning across the screen, revealing a green map of England against a white background. Five different images appear across the map with red location pins dotted around them. These include a small facility with a running track at the front, another facility with a basketball court and children playing, a facility with a rock climbing wall to the right hand side of it, a clubhouse set by a river with two people kayaking along it and finally a spectator stand with cyclists on a track in front of it.
The voiceover, Chris Boardman’s voice, begins: “There are thousands of organisations, places and spaces across the country that offer safe, welcoming and fun opportunities for people to be active.”
Different coloured lines appear on the map connecting each facility. The frame then zooms into an area of the map where several lines crossover with one another.
The voiceover continues: “Most of us need to travel to be able to access or deliver the sports and physical activities we love. The way we choose and encourage others to travel is more important than you might think.”
The frame transitions when zooming into the crossing lines and fades to reveal a new scene. Several cars, vans and lorries are stuck in traffic on a road with black smoke coming out of their exhaust and moving upwards to fill the already smoggy sky. The background slowly changes to a dark grey with big black clouds over the cars.
The voiceover continues: “Transport, which often relies on burning fuels like petrol and diesel, is one of the biggest emitters of harmful gases, including carbon dioxide. These gases, or emissions, trap heat from the sun, increase the earth’s temperature, damaging the planet and harming our health. We need to do things differently.”
The image pans upwards to focus on the dark sky, the cars go out of shot. A plane is shown flying across the screen leaving a trail of harmful gases behind it. The trail of gases then form lettering on screen in a thick black font reading We need to do things differently.
The frame transitions with a Buddle branded colour swipe to display a white screen. Several modes of transport enter the frame from both the right and left side, these include: a red bus, two individuals walking, a train, an electric car, an individual riding a mobility scooter, a skateboarder, someone on roller skates and a person riding a bike.
The voiceover continues: “There’s lots of ways of travelling that create fewer or even no emissions. By encouraging your participants, volunteers and visitors to use sustainable travel options your organisation can make a big difference.”
The other modes of transport disappear, leaving only the train. The frame follows the train as it moves at speed into the middle of a new scene. The train moves along a green hillside into a busy outdoor setting. The train pulls into a central station. In the background people can be seen cycling, walking and running through the hillside paths and fields, the sea is visible in the distance. In the foreground two people are stood at the bus stop, the red bus appears here, two electric cars are plugged in charging, a few children are running up the path and a man is roller skating in the same area.
The voiceover continues: “Cycling, walking, wheeling, jogging, running and scooting or even skating, are all forms of active travel and they’re all sustainable ways to get from place to place.”
The train and bus pull away and exit the scene as the frame pans upwards to focus on a clear blue sky. In time with the following audio, icons appear alongside some words. They include a stethoscope with Healthy written alongside it, a stack of coins next to Low-cost, high-fiving hands next to Fun and a love heart appearing next to Sociable.
The voiceover continues: “Not only are they healthy low-cost ways to get around, they can be fun and sociable too.”
The frame transitions with the vertical Buddle colour stripes to clear the scene. A person riding a bike appears centrally on a white background. The individual is cycling but stays central on the frame, a green leaf flies past them. A woman appears from the left-hand side of the screen; she’s in a blue Hijab and is holding a megaphone. Next to her the text appears Reminding people of the benefits and encouraging them! The cyclist continues and the woman and text moves past him as if he’s cycling away.
The voiceover matches the on-screen action: “You can promote active travel by reminding people of the benefits and encouraging them to try it!”
New text appears in front of the cyclist that reads Choosing locations that are easily accessible. A venue also appears to the right of the text, showing a community building with bike racks. Again, the cyclist continues on his journey and the text and imagery moves past him into the distance and off screen.
The voiceover continues: “Choosing locations that are easily accessible by walking and cycling.”
Text appears in front of the cyclist again reading Setting up walking and running groups or even bike buses. Alongside the text three people are jogging together, they wave to the cyclist, he waves back. The cyclist then overtakes them and the runners and text move behind him and off screen.
The voiceover continues: “Setting up walking and running groups or even bike buses so people can travel together.”
The cyclist then pulls up into a bike storage shed, gets off the bike and locks it up. Text appears alongside this reading Proving safe storage.
The voiceover continues: “Providing access to safe storage for bikes, equipment and waterproofs.”
The frame transitions with the vertical Buddle branded colours stripes to clear the scene. The new frame shows a white background with a person in a wheelchair moving to the centre. Three other people then appear including a child running in from the left, a pregnant woman walking in from the right and a man holding a pen and paper.
The voiceover continues: “Active travel may not always be a viable option for longer journeys, or if the environment doesn’t feel safe or accessible. In these cases, you can encourage people to try travelling sustainably in other ways.”
The four people shrink to the right-hand side of the screen making space for a large direction sign to the left. The Buddle colours then flash across the inside of the large direction sign and navy-blue text appears inside reading Easily accessible by public transport’ accompanied with an icon of a bus. With each element noted within the direction sign in this following scene, the man with the pen and paper writes it down.
The voiceover continues: “Choose venues and locations that are easily accessible by public transport.”
Another direction arrow appears beneath the first, the Buddle colours flash across this sign before the text Share route planners and timetables appears with a checklist and timer icon.
The voiceover continues: “Share route planners and timetables for local buses, trains, trams, metros or tubes and ensure your session times work with these.”
The first sign clears using the Buddle branded colour swipe. New text then reads Encourage lift-sharing. An icon of a car and a group of people appear above the text.
The voiceover continues: “Encourage lift-sharing.”
The second direction sign clears in the same way and now reads Arrange group travel options. An icon of a group of hands holding each other appear above the text.
The voiceover continues: “Arrange group travel options to get to fixtures, events and competitions.”
The first direction sign changes in the same way again to read Install electric vehicle charging points. An icon of an electric vehicle charging point appears above the text.
The voiceover continues: “Install, or signpost people to, electric vehicle charging points and if you’re further afield, prioritise travelling by train, boat or ferry over flying.”
The second arrow changes again to read Avoid flying with a train icon above the text.
The direction signs disappear and the four people enlarge to fill the screen centrally once again. An orange speech bubble then appears on the right of the four people, reading Sustainable travel plans. A second orange speech bubble then appears to the left of the four people reading Neutralise or offset carbon emissions.
The voiceover continues: “Developing sustainable travel plans and working to neutralise or offset your carbon emissions can make a real difference, especially if we all do it together.”
The frame zooms into the man in the wheelchair who’s now holding his phone to the camera. The phone shows the Buddle sustainable travel webpage. He swipes off of this page to a blank white screen; the phone is turned on its side and zoomed into further to fill the screen.
The voiceover continues: “To find out more, visit www.buddle.co.”
The video ends with a white screen framed with a colourful border in the Buddle colours. The Buddle logo appears at the top of the screen with supported by Sport England and the Sport England logo beneath. Underneath this the National Lottery logo appears with text beneath reading www.buddle.co and www.sportengland.org. A green leaf flies across the screen.
The voiceover ends. The music ends. The video ends.
