The video begins with a trio of logos displayed on a white screen. The Buddle logo is shown at the top of the screen, followed by ‘supported by Sport England’ and ‘The National Lottery’ logo beneath, the screen is framed with a colourful Buddle border.
The name of the video, ‘Biodiversity and physical activity’, appears beneath in dark blue text.
Upbeat music starts and continues throughout the video. Subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen throughout, accompanying the voiceover.
The frame transitions with a horizontal, Buddle-branded colour swipe, revealing a frame that’s split into three scenes, which all show bright sunny outdoor spaces. On the left is a rugby pitch with trees in the background; it’s lush and green. The middle image shows a cycle path and walking trail within the countryside, the sun is shining bright and a sign reading ‘Cycle routes, walking trails’ can be seen. The right scene includes a boathouse on a lake amongst some trees, the water is blue, and some kayaks are stacked up alongside the building.
A green leaf enters from the left and flies across all three scenes. Groups of people then appear within each scene. On the left scene, a man and a boy are kicking a football and a boy and a girl are throwing a rugby ball. In the middle scene, two cyclists are using the cycle path and two people are walking on the trail, including a man holding a map and a women using a walking pole. In the right scene, a man is in a kayak on the lake, next to a boy and girl swimming. A woman is standing next to the boathouse looking over the lake.
The voiceover, Chris Boardman’s voice, begins: “Many sports and physical activities rely on our natural environment. From playgrounds and pitches to parks, waterways, forests, mountains and beaches, our outdoor spaces are precious and finite resources.”
The people in each scene fade away and a brown leaf flies across, as before, from left to right on screen. Each of the three scenes change to show the impact of climate change. On the left scene, it’s raining, and the rugby pitch is now waterlogged. The same four people from the previous frame walk onto the pitch but are unable to do their activities, they appear sad and exit the scene. In the middle scene the sun is enlarged, the grass has turned brown, the floor is cracked, and the man and women are visibly sweating and struggling to walk due to the heat. On the right scene, the sky is grey, the lake is now covered in green algae with flies hovering above. Three people walk into the scene wanting to be active but are unable to, because of the condition of the lake, so walk away.
The voiceover continues: “We’re now experiencing the impact of climate change more than ever before. From poor air and water quality to more extreme weather events, like flooding and heatwaves, it’s negatively affecting our green and blue spaces, and our ability to do and watch the activities we love.”
The frame transitions with a Buddle branded colour swipe. Four images appear in a line in front of a white background, including a boy with a prosthetic leg, a pink bird, a green tree and a microscope showing three microorganisms. The word ‘Biodiversity’ appears above the different images in purple text.
The voiceover continues: “Of course it’s not just sport, climate change is affecting all life on earth, from the animals and plants we see to the tiny microorganisms, like bacteria, that we don’t. This variety of life is called biodiversity.”
These images disappear, and a rotating globe appears underneath the word biodiversity. Two flexing arms appear from either side of the globe. The image zooms into England within the globe.
The voiceover continues: “Biodiversity makes our planet strong and resilient, giving us everything we need to: grow food, access natural materials to make things with, enjoy clean air and clean water, develop medicines, and look after our physical and mental health. If we don’t take care of it, it can’t take care of us.”
The frame continues zooming until stopping to show a countryside scene with a blue sky, two trees, hills, a pathway and a pink bird flying across the scene. There is a man wearing an orange t-shirt holding a watering can, watering a plant. As he waters the plant it grows to show three leaves and three tomatoes. Butterflies and bees fly around the scene and a pink flower grows in the bottom left corner. Two women appear from the left and are walking along the path. One woman is wearing a blue dress and hijab, and the other women is wearing an orange outfit and is pushing a blue pram. A boy in a red vest and girl in an orange vest run in from the left. The boy is holding a magnifying glass and holds it above a purple flower, showing a ladybird. The words ‘Grow food’, ‘Natural materials’, ‘Clean air and water’, ‘Develop medicines’ and ‘Look after our health’ appear across the sky in different Buddle colours.
The frame transitions with a horizontal Buddle branded colour swipe. The scene shows a basketball court in front of a community centre. Five people are on the court playing basketball, including two people in wheelchairs. Some flowers and a small tree are positioned in front of the community centre. The scene zooms out showing a full map of England, which includes different activity scenes. The basketball court is located in the southeast. In the southwest there’s a glass fronted clubhouse with a man and women stood in front and two trees either side. In the east there are two people running on a path in a park alongside orange cones. In the centre there’s a lake with a clubhouse behind it. There’s a man in a wheelchair fishing from a platform; five other people are standing beside the lake, and a recycling bin can be seen. In the north there’s an image showing two cyclists on a path in front of spectator seating. Further north is an image showing a building next to a climbing wall.
The voiceover continues: “We need to draw on the collective power of the thousands of clubs and community organisations across England, to tackle climate change together.”
A green leaf goes across the screen and the scene zooms into the image of the lake. Two men in kayaks move across the lake, from left to right. The man continues fishing on the left, next to him there’s a man using a litter picker and a boy holding a broom who are stood in front of the building. A man and two children are seen placing a bird box onto a wooden pole, and two women can be seen running across the hills in the background.
The voiceover continues: “Protecting biodiversity in your local area is a fantastic way to help achieve this. If you’re unsure where to start, that’s fine, get a willing group together so you can think things through and make a plan.”
The frame transitions with a horizontal Buddle branded colour swipe. On the right, a boy is leaning against a tree trunk. He’s wearing a purple t shirt, holding a ball and a mobile phone and wearing headphones. There’s a bright blue sky and grass across the scene. The boy is throwing a ball across the screen and catching it when it rebounds to him. The scene moves upwards, and a tree covered in brown leaves appears.
The voiceover continues: “No matter what activities you provide or facilities you use, there’s lots you can do to help. Here’s some ideas to get you started:”
As the voiceover continues, a brown leaf falls from the top of the scene with a large ‘B’ written on the leaf in white text. This is followed with some smaller black text to read ‘Buy locally grown food’. The ball the boy is playing with continues to cross the bottom of the screen from time to time. The words disappear and the leaf falls out of shot and to the ground. The exact sequence then continues with the rest of the list below, each using a leaf to highlight the first word and the text following after. On screen, the list reads:
- Involve yourself in local biodiversity projects
- Offer to fundraise
- Develop wildlife habitats
- Invest in sustainable energy
- Vary your grass cutting habits
- Encourage others to get involved
- Re-use, rather than replace things
- Save and recycle rainwater
- Include biodiversity in your sustainability policy
- Think about planting native plants
- Yell about your progress
The text disappears and the final leaf falls, the shot follows this leaf to reveal a pile on the floor with the word Biodiversity written among the leaves.
The voiceover accompanying this scene: “Buy locally grown, responsibly sourced food. Involve yourself in local biodiversity projects. Offer to fundraise for local wildlife charities or trusts. Develop wildlife habits. Invest in sustainable energy. Vary your grass cutting habits and limit pesticide use. Encourage others to get involved. Re-use, rather than replace things. Save and recycle rainwater. Include biodiversity as part of your sustainability policy. Think about planting native trees, hedges or wildflower areas. Yell about your progress and be an advocate!”
The scene zooms into the mobile phone held by the boy which is showing the ‘Environmental sustainability’ Buddle webpage.
The voiceover continues: “To learn more about biodiversity and environmental sustainability, visit www.buddle.co.”
The boy swipes the webpage away to reveal a blank screen. The mobile phone turns on its side, and three logos emerge on a white screen with a Buddle coloured border. A green leaf blows from left to right across the frame. The Buddle logo appears at the top, followed by ‘supported by Sport England’ and ‘The National Lottery’ logo beneath. At the bottom www.buddle.co and www.sportengland.org are shown in black text.
The music fades, the video ends.
