Going for Green

Every Move is Sport England's ambitious strategy to promote environmental sustainability in sport and physical activity.

It includes more than £40 million of funding to foster green innovation and participation, and help our sector become more resilient to climate change.

The Going for Green Pledge is a simple way for organisations to join that movement by committing to becoming more sustainable.

Every club, community group and organisation in England is invited to sign the pledge, which was first launched as part of the Pedal for Paris event in summer 2024.

There are many ways you can take steps to becoming more green, from promoting active travel to improving energy efficiency and increasing biodiversity at your venues and events.

Going for Green Pledge

Dear Sport England/Buddle,

Our sports or physical activity organisation pledges to become more environmentally sustainable, ensuring our sector is leading the way in tackling climate change.

We will promote environmental sustainability by:

reducing energy and water usage
championing walking, cycling and lift-sharing when travelling to activities
drastically reducing reliance on single-use plastics
recycling waste and increasing the reuse of sports equipment and kit
boosting activity to nurture nature and wildlife.

What was Pedal for Paris?

Pedal for Paris was an eight-day bike ride from Manchester to Paris in July 2024, to promote green action and innovation ahead of the Olympic Games in the French capital.

It was led by Sport England chair Chris Boardman and aimed to galvanise the sport and physical activity sector to step up its work in tackling climate change.

The Going for Green Pledge was launched to coincide with the ride and more than 200 organisations, clubs and community groups across England signed it, committing to become more environmentally sustainable.

Starting at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester on 16 July and finishing in Paris on 23 July 2024, Boardman was joined by multi-Olympic medallist and UK Sport chair Katherine Grainger and a host of other high-profile participants.

Pedal for Paris referenced not just the host city for that summer’s Olympics and Paralympics but also the Paris Agreement, the landmark international treaty on climate change signed in December 2015.

The aim of the ride was to urge greater action to limit global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and encourage our sector to accelerate action in pursuit of this goal.

Ahead of the ride, Chris said: "We’re excited to be shining a light on some of the most inspirational and innovative people and projects who are putting the environment first.

"Climate change is already impacting people getting active so we must act now. Leading up to Pedal For Paris, we want sport and physical activity organisations to sign the Going for Green pledge and commit to new ways to become more sustainable.

"Small steps across our sector can lead to big results in our aim to become more environmentally sustainable."
